
Carlos is a conservationist from Brazil, currently living in the US. Carlos is a Brazilian biologist with a M.S. degree in Ecology from University of Brasilia. For over 10 years, he has been involved with Brazillian research and conservation projects mainly involving parrot species in captivity and the wild. He worked for three years (1999-2001) as Bird Curator at the Brasilia Zoological Garden, where he had the chance to improve the captive collection of parrot species. In 2001, he was invited to work as an endangered species consultant in the Fauna Protection Coordination of IBAMA (Brazilian Federal Agency of Environment). During this time, he participated in the establishment of conservation strategies for a number of species, including parrots, curassows and raptors. He became a member of several conservation committees such as for the Spix macaw, Lear's macaw, Hyacinth macaw, Golden Conure, Alagoas Curassow and Brazilian Raptors. He also worked as the studbook-keeper assistant for two critically endangered species of blue macaws (Lear's and Spix's macaws). He also has been in several publications, including Conservation Action Plans for several Brazilian endangered species. In 2005, he started his Ph.D as a Fulbright Fellow at the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Oregon State University, doing his research on the Endangered Pfrimer’s parakeet in Central Brazil.
